Child death and injury prevention in emergency situations are an important UNICEF priority. Therefore, we were pleased to award the prize to the XIV International Rally of Young Rescuers and Firefighters participants who are well aware of safety measures and ways to rescue a comrade who has gotten into trouble.
The event was held within the Child Injury Prevention project with financial support of the Russian Federation and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Belarus.
The team from Belarus became the winner of the XIV International Rally of Young Rescuers and Firefighters which ran on July 7-16 at the Homiel Engineering Institute of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Lyceum. This was announced during the closing ceremony of the Children's Forum, BelTA correspondent reported. The second place was taken by the Georgian team, the third place—by the Ukrainian team. In total, the International Rally was attended by delegations from 12 countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine.
The closing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Emergency Situations of Belarus Vladimir Vashchenko, as well as representatives of the embassies of Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Kazakhstan and Italy.
Speaking with journalists, Vladimir Vashchenko drew their attention to the high-quality organization of the event. “Children are our future and the country’s strategic reserve, therefore we pay special attention to working with the younger generation,” he said. The Minister also stressed that the International Rally of Young Rescuers held annually in Belarus is a good platform for communication between children, allowing them to share experiences, learn about the life of their peers from other countries through real interaction rather than from books, as well as laying foundations for their cooperation in the future.
During the 9 Rally days, young rescuers participated in the competitions, demonstrating their best qualities, skills, and physical training. Also, trainings, workshop, and a rich cultural program were organized for the children. The main purpose of the forum is to teach children rescue and self-rescue skills in various emergency situations, to develop a safety culture in the society, and exchange experience and new practices.
On July 12, the “Rescuer” National field camp was opened on the basis of the Lyceum. It brought together young Belarusian leaders and winners of the regional competitions held by the Belarusian Youth Organization of Rescuers and Firefighters. Today, during the closing of the field camp, Vladimir Vashchenko and other guests acquainted with the living conditions of young rescuers, talked to the delegation of each region, wished the children success in their training and gave them gifts from the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
XIV International Rally of Young Rescuers and Firefighters was closed with a concert prepared by the participating teams. During the closing ceremony, the winners received cups, all other participants were awarded diplomas and memorable gifts.
